Phishing scam targeting domain owners

News Comments Off on Phishing scam targeting domain owners

We have been advised by our Registrar, Heart Internet, that there’s a phishing scam targeting domain owners which has been growing in intensity.

If you are a domain owner you may be targeted by some malicious emails purporting to be sent from your domain registrar.

These emails are part of a large scale phishing scam, targeted at a large number of domain registrars, not just ours. You may find that you have received similar emails from different registrars that you have domain names with.

These phishing emails are commonly using the subject line “Domain [xyz] Suspension Notice” and will prompt you to download an attachment, or reply directly to the email. Here’s an example…

Subject: Domain [DOMAIN] Suspension Notice

Dear Sir/Madam,

The following domain names have been suspended for violation of the [REGISTRAR] Abuse Policy:

Domain Name: [DOMAIN]
Registrar: [REGISTRAR]
Registrant Name: [YOUR NAME]

Multiple warnings were sent by [REGISTRAR] Spam and Abuse Department to give you an opportunity to address the complaints we have received.

We did not receive a reply from you to these email warnings so we then attempted to contact you via telephone.

We had no choice but to suspend your domain name when you did not respond to our attempts to contact you.

Click here [LINK] and download a copy of complaints we have received.

Please contact us by email at mailto:[EMAIL] for additional information regarding this notification.

Sincerely,
[REGISTRAR]
Spam and Abuse Department
Abuse Department Hotline: 480-124-0101

We ask that you are extra vigilant when checking your email, especially with regards to any emails asking you to click on a link, or download any attachments.

What to do if you receive a suspicious phishing scam email

If you have any doubts as to the validity of any email you have received from your registrar please contact them directly, or if we act for you, contact us, and do not respond to the email in question.
